This is not about your normal protests with picket signs, puppets and whatever gimmicks today's hippies are using. Those types of things just don't work unless you get the cops to beat the shit outta you on national TV or if you're just protesting a bias killing in an unsympathetic neighborhood, your appearance has inspired the locals to make asses out of themselves by holding up watermelons or signs with anti-sodomy slogans on them.
First, where I'm coming from:
I'm a left wing nut who thinks the President is a dick. Unfortunately, I'm not convinced Kerry's more than a short term solution to the Team Bush problem. The Democrats are pussies, generally speaking, and their play it safe attitude may ultimately doom them as a political force and doom John Kerry (should he win) to a one term presidency (handing the baton to Jeb Bush, Rudy Giuliani or both). A Kerry loss will allow Hillary Clinton to come to the rescue in 2008 and give the party and the country the kick in the pants it needs.
If he wins, there'll be no chance for a Clinton or even Dean presidency until 2012 and by then they may both be finished. Who knows?
So what then?
A Bush loss may force the Repubs to actually become as moderate as they pretended to be during their last convention and perhaps a decent candidate like John McCain would actually win the nomination. How about if they had some help?
What if a large number of liberal to moderate democrats and independents switched party affiliation, allowing us to vote for and perhaps shape the next Republican nominee? He'd be no out and out liberal, of course, but we could keep future Dick Cheneys, Dan Quayles and the like away from national elected office. The far right could be exiled to one or more "third parties" where they belong.
This is just a pipe dream, only without the pipe (believe it or not). I have no idea what sort of numbers would be required to make something like this work nor the organizational skills to even attempt such a movement, but I do think it's a fun idea. They say "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em." I'm saying if we do beat them, follow them home and finish the job.
If Kerry wins, I plan on registering as a Republican and voting in their primaries in 2008. Doesn't mean I'll vote for them come that November, though anything is possible.
If McCain ran against Gore in the last election I would've voted for McCain. I voted for Nader. This year I'm voting for Kerry despite my misgivings.
I prefer pussy to dick.
