The Jesus Fist!

The simultaneous Cantonese/Mandarin suggests that this video was encoded from the VCD, which in HK would separate the Chinese languages into the left and right channels. The preferred language would be selected by isolating one or the other. I have this movie (Legend Of The Liquid Sword) on DVD and the picture quality is so bad it might as well be VCD (a pre-DVD, movie on 2 CDs format).

I first saw this on VHS (probably a bootleg), and I think the subtitles were slightly different, with the bearded man (not actually Jesus, but a disciple) threatening to use his Jesus Fist, rather than Jesus Punches. One of my favorite scenes, ever. The movie itself? I vaguely recall it being fun, but that's about it. Also, it has a short appearance by Gordon Liu (Lau Kar Fai).

Network Solutions = Douchebags????

Geert Wilders has had his website, which promotes his anti-Islam film, Fitna, shut down by it's host, Network Solutions. While I don't agree with some of Mr. Wilders views*, I don't like what's going on here. Of course, he can move to a different host, though they aren't the only providers with clauses about "hate speech".

What I like even less is this story (from January) that Network Solutions is registering domain names entered into their search site, to force interested parties into purchasing said domains from them instead of from a (less expensive) competitor.

However, when trying this myself with a couple of bullshit names (soundofnmnmnm, jesusisgoogly), both remained available after leaving and returning to the site. Either they've changed their tune, or have become good at filtering out bullshit names. The latter is unlikely since so many domain names sound silly to begin with (including my own).

Jesusisgoogly might have a couple of decent uses, but I'm gonna pass. As of this writing, though, it's up for grabs.

* www.fitnathemovie.info is still online and was linked above. It appears to be a mirror to www.fitnathemovie.com, though I never saw the offending site, so I guess I can't really say. Supposedly, the fifteen minute film will be viewable there.

Bin Laden Uses Just For Men...

And still looks like a sickly old fuck.

He's got a new announcement coming out, on video tape. Apparently not hip to DVD yet, much less any of the Hi-Def formats. Anyhow, provided he hasn't committed any more mass murders by then, the new video, should it surface, might be worth a laugh or two.
Here's the BBC story about the new tape and the dyed beard.

That's Funny. He Doesn't Look Jewish.

The video of Mickey Mouse's terrorist cousin, Farfur being beaten to death at the hands of an "Israeli agent".
Funny and sick at the same time. I'd be less judgmental about it if it was a Palestinian sketch comedy show aimed at an audience older than 15.

Aw, Hell.

It's Jesus VS Vampires in Loaded Bible. I love the idea and I haven't fully read the Newsarama article, yet (more page samples there). I once had an idea for a Warlord Christ comicbook or Flash animation, where Jesus leads the world in a fight against aliens. It wouldn't have come out as cool as this, though. I just don't think I could fork out 5 bucks for a 48 page comicbook.

Oh, wait. I did worse than that yesterday, when coming out of Forbidden Planet in NYC yesterday. I saw some dude selling some self printed booklets, of something called Sausagehead: The Passion Of Sir Shizzle Monizzle. The title and the cover image was so insane, I had to buy a copy. I paid 5 bucks. It's over fifty pages of text, photocopied, except for the cover which appears to be laser printed. He also offered to sell a copy of "How To Put Your Foot In The Devil's Ass", but I told him, I'd wait to see if I liked this offering, first.

Do I like it? I was a bit disappointed that there wasn't an actual narrative. It's more of a religious rant, but what I've read, scanning bits and pieces here and there is pretty funny:

"Sausagehead because of his nose like that of a pig cannot smell what the Rock is cooking. The Rock I'm talking about is not the Rock from wrestling here in the United States, but he's the Rock of refuge whose name is Christ Jesus."

"Another sad story I heard is about a certain man in South Africa who screwed a chicken, and the chicken died. I was very young when I heard the horrible story about what had happened to the chicken, but now that I am a man I realize that to do such silly things is to be a Sausagehead. I hope you enjoyed this book, but even if you didn't: That's not my problem. I did what I had to do by unleashing this book of Sausagehead, because a man got to do what a man got to do."

If this sounds like your kinda thing, the author, PMD can be found on the corner of 840 Broadway, between Forbidden Planet and the movie theatre across the street every Wednesday afternoon, or so he said. Neither the website given in his book, www.PMDtheAuthor.com nor the one on his business card, www.southafricanauthor.com seem to be working.

So I was at Forbidden Planet yesterday, cuz I finally went to see V For Vendetta, which was playing across the street. I'd thought about going on Saturday, but just didn't feel like it. I'd forgotten it was free comicbook day, so I missed out. Anyway, the movie was pretty good. The source material wasn't raped the way From Hell and League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen were, and at the same time they were able to make a decent and entertaining film. I didn't like that they didn't use the communion scene from the comicbook. That happens to be my favorite part in the book. Also, we get to see the sensitive side of V. I was mildly annoyed by that, but it's no big deal. I'll get the DVD at some point (wait for the special edition?). There are some elements that right wingers will take (have taken - the flick's been out for a while) issue with, especially as the source material predicted an out of control leftist government, but I feel the change and added subplot was appropiate for the times we live in.

So, at the comicbook store I did a bit of looking around, and saw a few things that interested me, but didn't pick up. It was pretty crowded for about 3 in the afternoon, and pretty hot. Probably a good thing I wasn't there on Saturday. I eventually settled on Godland volume one; Hello Cosmic by Joe Casey and Tom Scioli. Scioli does the best 70's Kirby since Keith Giffen's Defenders run back in the 70's itself. I'd read some preview pages on Newsarama a while back and was intrigued. The Dialogue is pretty funny, which mixes Kirby's style (which is sorta like movie producer Robert Evans if you've seen The Kid Stays In The Picture - Saw it on TV the other day) and something out of The Simpsons. I'm only about halfway, but enjoying it, so far. A couple of things bother me, though. 1) the lip piercings on the youngest sister are drawn in such a way, that from a distance it appears she has worms sticking out of her mouth. I don't know how Kirby would've handled that, but I know it's wrong. 2) a scene where a general hands another sister a disc. He has six fingers. Two are thumbs. Maybe I'm not gettin' something here.

Not content with my purchase I headed to Sullivan Street, to a store I used to frequent. I've forgotten it's name, but it's gone. I may head to Midtown Comics in the next day or few. I've avoided Amazon.com for the last week or two cuz I wanted to visit a shop or few. There are a couple of local Long Island spots, that I'd like to drop by to see if they're still around.

Da Vinci Code Plagiarism

I understand how copying another fictional work can be troublesome. But if you put forth historical speculation that's (presumably) meant to be accepted as fact, does one then own these facts?
Say a new big bang theory is conceived, is that idea copyrighted, and does that mean a new Star Trek movie can't incorporate this new theory in it's story, even though it may be fact?

Then again, there was an attempt to patent the Human Genome Project, which could'a made my own DNA somebody else's intellectual property.

There was an earlier suit based on a previous fictional novel in which a lot of the shit that happens allegedly occurs in The Da Vinci Code. I think that may have been thrown out of court. This newer suit revolves around a non-fiction work. I'm interested in seeing how it all turns out.

I haven't read any of the books involved, though I have read at least a couple that go into the Jesus and Mary Magdalene thing (probably referencing The Holy Blood, The Holy Grail itself), and there was that really cool episode of Millennium that had the Patti Smith song Dancing Barefoot at the beginning.

I look forward to the Da Vinci Code film, in any case.

A Christmas Song and a Christmas Video

Merry Christmas And A Funky New Year

Recorded back in 1994 on a Tascam 688, a multitrack cassette recorder with eight audio tracks or seven with midi - I don't remember if I used midi, but I probably did. Given away to friends, family and whatnot as a cassette tape in '94, then as a CD in 1999, and finally, part of the song showed up as a soundtrack to a video X-Mas card given out on VHS and VCD in 2001. The gift that keeps on giving. Or at least, keeps being given.
Download or stream from the Internet Archive (click here)

Black Jesus and Baby Buddha - X-Mas 2003

A little video done in flash with digital photos of an area of Hempstead just a couple of blocks from my apartment, used as a back drop. It was given out as a Christmas card that year on DVD-R. I've been threatening to do more of these, and actually started one almost a month ago, but I've put it on hold and will continue it later. It'll be used as next year's Christmas card, maybe.
It can be viewed at Google Video (click here)

The Devilfish of Islamofascism by Edward Cline

I didn't think I'd like where this article was going, but I agree with at least 99% of it. Click the title to read the whole thing.

To make a long story short:

Summary: The advocates and promulgators of Islamofascism, like the devilfish in Hugo's "Toilers of the Sea," stupefy their prey, and wait, then strike. Missing from the real life dilemma is a Gilliatt. President Bush is not one, nor is Prime Minister Tony Blair of Britain. They attack the tentacles but, in the name of tolerance, refuse to cut off the head.

This is the money shot, right here:

The octopus head of Islamofascism is: Iran, Syria, and Saudi Arabia. To a lesser extent, one must include Pakistan and even Afghanistan, since the Taliban are apparently still active in both those countries and the heads of those countries are impotent or unwilling to eradicate it. Most of the madrasses in Pakistan are subsidized by Saudi Arabia, are a chief source of suicide bombers. One might argue that Iraq was a good starting place to eradicate our enemy. But why the U.S. should be expending lives and fortune to establish a “democratic” government there, beggars explanation and reason. After Saddam Hussein and his government had been overthrown, we should have moved on to Syria or Iran and let the Iraqis sort out what to do next. We are under no moral obligation to help anyone discover the benefits of Western institutions, not at the price of sacrificing American lives, American wealth, and American liberties, which is what is occurring now.

This bit, I'm not so sure of...

Where would the West be today if Churchill and Roosevelt were stupefied and adopted the Bush/Blair philosophy of fighting an enemy intent on conquest? Where would we be if they had restricted their combat operations to fighting saboteurs, provocateurs and secret agents on the “home front”? Where would we be if they had not judged Nazism and Bushido as inimical to Western civilization?

I don't know that either the U.S. nor Britain were thinking all too much about Nazism and Bushido until after the smoke cleared.

How the Islamic crazies are like the Right

From DailyKos.com

How the Islamic crazies are like the Right

Mon Jul 4th, 2005 at 23:47:07 PDT

Funny how the wingers try to claim American liberals are in league with crazy fundamentalist Muslims.

Reality is, we hate everything Islamic fundamentalism stands for. On the other hand, the Dobson's of the Republican Party -- you know, the people running the show -- have far more in common with the enemy than they'd ever like to admit.

Religion in government

Al Qaida/Taliban: One and the same
American Taliban: One and the same
Liberals: Separation of church and state

Schools

Al Qaida/Taliban: Religious indoctrination. Run by clergy.
American Taliban: School prayer. Religious indoctrination (creationism and "intelligent design"). Private religious school system.
Liberals: Leave religious teachings to parents and sunday school.

Women

Al Qaida/Taliban: No school, must cover entire body, no rights
American Taliban: Government control over reproductive freedoms, hostility to Title IX, hostility to working women
Liberals: Equality of the sexes

Religious freedom

Al Qaida/Taliban: 'Think like us, or we'll whiip you and/or chop off your head'
American Taliban: 'Think like us, or we'll condemn you to hell'
Liberals: To each her own

Homosexuality

Al Qaida/Taliban: Eradicate them from society
American Taliban: Eradicate them from society
Liberals: Equality under the law

You guys can take it from here.

Update (from the comments):

Torture

Al Qaida/Taliban: Torture them or chop off their heads
American Taliban: Torture them or homosexually rape them.
Liberals: No torture

Medicine and Science

Al Qaida/Taliban: Faith-based world view
American Taliban: Faith-based world view
Liberals: Reality-based community

and part two

They are more like our enemy, Part II

Tue Jul 5th, 2005 at 12:56:25 PDT

Last night I wrote "How the Islamic crazies are like the Right" to hammer home how fundamentalist Islam has more in common with the radical religious right, the American Taliban, than it does with the American Left.

This is a key point-- it was easier for the Right to tie the American Left with our previous boogeyman, the communists, since we technically were nearer to the extreme left than where conservatives.

But today, things look quite different. I started the ball rolling on similarities on that previous post. Here are more similarities, as submitted by readers:

Foreign Policy

Al Qaida/Taliban: World domination - do it our way or we attack
American Taliban: World domination - do it our way or we attack
Liberals: Peace and international cooperation

Executing Minors

Al Qaida/Taliban: Executing Minors OK
American Taliban: Executing Minors OK
Liberals: Find this to be a barbaric and embarrassing practice

Pop Culture

Al Qaida/Taliban: Hate it... kill it
American Taliban: Hate it... ban it
Liberals: Laugh at it... boycott it

Self-image

Al Qaida/Taliban: Belief in their own infallibility
American Taliban: Belief in their own infallibility
Liberals: Willingness to consider other viewpoints

God

Al Qaida/Taliban: God is on our side and will help us kill our enemies
American Taliban: God is on our side and will help us kill our enemies
Liberals: God may or may not exist and will not help us kill anyone

Stem Cell Research

Al Qaida/Taliban: No Stem cell research
American Taliban: No Stem cell research
Liberals: Stem cell research

Leaders

Al Qaida/Taliban: God choose Osama Bin Laden to defeat the Great Satan
American Taliban: God choose George W. Bush to lead us
Liberals: God didn't choose anyone

Use of Force

Al Qaida/Taliban: As a means of propagating a world view
American Taliban: As a means of propagating a world view
Liberals: As a last resort

Bush's War in Iraq

Al Qaida/Taliban: Love it!
American Taliban: Love it!
Liberals: It's a disaster

Press

Al Qaida/Taliban: Control of the Press
American Taliban: Manipulation of the Press
Liberals: Freedom of the Press

Free Speech

Al Qaida/Taliban: Anyone who disagrees with us is an infidel and must be silenced
American Taliban: Anyone who disagrees with us is a traitor and must be silenced
Liberals: Anyone who disagrees with us is in for a spirited discussion

Individuals

Al Qaida/Taliban: Conform or else
American Taliban: Conform or else
Liberals: Embrace diversity

Cooperation

Al Qaida/Taliban: You're either with us or against us
American Taliban: You're either with us or against us
Liberals: We're all in this together

Tolerance

Al Qaida/Taliban: Death to the infidels
American Taliban: Kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity
Liberals: Live and let live

Conscience

Al Qaida/Taliban: Obedience to authority
American Taliban: Obedience to authority
Liberals: Critical reflection

Origins

Al Qaida/Taliban: Universe and man created 6,000 years ago by God
American Taliban: Universe and man created 6,000 years ago by God
Liberals: The Universe began as we know it at least 14 billion years ago, maybe more

Leaders

Al Qaida/Taliban: Subservient to will of its leaders
American Taliban: Subservient to will of its leaders
Liberals: Will served by Representative government

Fear

Al Qaida/Taliban: Life is scary and uncertain, seek refuge in moral absolutes and scorn those that threaten those absolutes
American Taliban: Life is scary and uncertain, seek refuge in moral absolutes and scorn those that threaten those absolutes
Liberals: Life is scary and uncertain, seek refuge in accepting that respect for our fellow man and the individual choices he/she makes is eminently moral

Women

Al Qaida/Taliban: A woman's place is in the home
American Taliban: A woman's place is in the home
Liberals: A woman's place is wherever she wants it to be

Marriage

Al Qaida/Taliban: Marriage is only between a man and a woman
American Taliban: Marriage is only between a man and a woman
Liberals: Marriage is between any two people who love each other

We could keep this up all day, I suspect. Remember, the point isn't that the American Taliban is just like Al Qaida (though given the chance...), the point is that there's no reason that liberals would ever "root" for Al Qaida or the Taliban or any of the crazies in the Islamic fundamentalist world.

The reasons we hate the American Taliban are the same reasons we hate fundamentalists of all stripes -- they seek to impose their own moral code on the rest of society, and do so with the zeal and moral absolutism possible only from those who believe they are doing "God's work".

"He died for our sins" and all that jazz...

Reminder: I'm an Atheist.
I used to be a Christian, but never really a believer. I was just sorta going with the flow till I actually thought about it and gradually decided it was bullshit. One thing I had trouble with was Jesus dying for our sins. I don't believe that was ever explained to my satisfaction. On the other hand, I never questioned it, just kinda took the "if you say so" attitude, and let it go. Seemed to me that Jesus died because some dudes came and got him and then nailed him to some wood.

Anyway, a few years ago (or maybe not that long ago) I came across a bible tract on the train. I generally don't read these things, but I did read that one. I thought it did a fine job of explaining the concept of Jesus sacrifice (I don't know if most Christians would agree with this take, though), and gave me a great story idea, I may try out eventually. I'm still an Atheist, though I feel I have a greater understanding of the mythology of Christ.

My intention was to type out the whole damn thing manually, but a search showed that to be unnecessary as it already exists on the web. Clicking on the title above will take you to the web page. I don't know who those folks are (www.hopeofisrael.net), but the printed tract is from the Fellowship Tract League. I provide a swipe of the material here....
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) is the holiest day in the year. It is known as "the Sabbath of Sabbaths." This is the day when we as Jews ask the Lord to forgive us for our sins of the year gone by.

So a sacrifice is needed for our transgressions; it was instituted to cover our sin.

Therefore, if Jesus Christ was the perfect sacrifice for our sins, there is no need for the sacrificial system today.

WHAT MUST I DO TO HAVE THIS SACRIFICE APPLIED TO MY HEART, SO THAT ALL MY SINS WILL BE WASHED IN MESSIAH'S BLOOD FOREVER?
