My Trip To Tokyo
Wednesday august 21st
Homeward bound
Yep. Time to head home. Shower. Pack bags. Said sayonara and arigato gozaimashta
to Hiro's mom. Hiro accompanies me to the transfer where I'm to catch the
express train to Narita airport. We say our goodbyes and I go. The train ride
is longer than I expected (more than an hour), and farther outside Tokyo than
I thought. I can see what seems like farmland out the window. At the airport,
my fears about getting the sword on board are unfounded. It can't be carried
on, of course. It goes with the checked luggage. It turns out I have more
than I should. Normally you can have one checked bag and one carry on, which
I was unaware of. The girl at the counter let me go with a warning. She could've
charged me over $300. Which I didn't have. What would've happened then? That
was a close one.
Most of my last 1000 yen is spent on a sushi lunch and junk food, some of
which comes on the plane with me. The junk food, that is.
I was determined to get my window seat this time out, but there was no need
for an argument as the couple next to me had no confusion about the seating
arrangements. Most of my waking hours were spent glued to the window. I think
we flew at about 35,000 feet. I had very little in the way of anxiety regarding
the flight and the height issue that normally plagues me.
There were two meals this time out; Dinner and Lunch. Dinner was chicken and
rice, along with a salad and a little sushi. Lunch was noodles.
The entertainment was Clockstoppers and Big Fat Liar, as well as something
else. I didn't watch any of it. I just wasn't interested. If I wasn't sleeping,
I was reading the vol. 2 compilation of Tom Strong or staring at the tiny
icebergs below me on the arctic ocean (or wherever they were).
We actually hit night on our trip back, a contrast to the constant daylight
on the trip to Japan.
Over all, it was a smooth flight. Some turbulence, but like before, no big
deal. We arrived at Kennedy perhaps 35 minutes before we left Narita on the
same day. Think about that next time you're high. It may have been mentioned
before, Japan is 13 hours ahead of the U.S., sometimes 14, depending on daylight
savings time, which they don't recognize.
Greeted by my brother and niece at the airport, I headed home...
Sayanara, Nippon. See you next year...
